The “anointed priest” is an unusual term that is found only in Leviticus 4:3, Leviticus 4:5, Leviticus 4:16, and Leviticus 6:22 [Leviticus 6:15]. We know from elsewhere that Aaron and his sons were anointed (Exodus 28:41; Exodus 30:30; Exodus 40:15; Numbers 3:3). The phrase could refer to any one of them. Moreover, as the priests had a number of responsibilities with the previous offerings, this provision is made so that they might be restored to their office and duties. The term “anointed priest” then, most naturally refers to the general office of priest.
3 if it is the anointed priest who sins, thus bringing guilt on the people, then he shall offer for the sin that he has committed a bull from the herd without blemish to the LORD for a sin offering.
