What is the fifth that the offender needs to add to make compensation?

Leviticus 6:5 (ESV)

5 or anything about which he has sworn falsely, he shall restore it in full and shall add a fifth to it, and give it to him to whom it belongs on the day he realizes his guilt.

In addition to restoring what was taken, compensation is to be given for the guilt related to the deception of a neighbour. The offender must repay the monetary equivalent of the property about which he deceived, plus one fifth. The restoration of what was defrauded and being willing to pay the added surcharge showed that the contrition was genuine.
