The phrase restore your fortunes
(ESV, NIV) suggests a general restoration of fortunes. Alternately, the phrase may be read as return your captives
(KJV), in which case it could refer to the physical return of exiles on the day of the Lord. It is possible that the ambiguity is deliberate. What seems in view is a reason for hope, in that restoration would come after devastation.1 See further on Zephaniah 2:7.
20 At that time I will bring you in, at the time when I gather you together; for I will make you renowned and praised among all the peoples of the earth, when I restore your fortunes before your eyes,” says the LORD.
