Remembering your calling

Ezra 2:40–62 (ESV)

40 The Levites: the sons of Jeshua and Kadmiel, of the sons of Hodaviah, 74.

There were priests, Levites, singers, gatekeepers, temple servants...Even when they could not be employed in their calling, nobody lost track of their true and highest calling. Imagine you are a singer and you cannot sing the praises of God, perhaps for seventy years? Or imagine you grew up and your parents were telling you, you are a descendant as one of the singers in the temple, [you might have thought] But Mommy, there is no temple, and what are the songs that we are going to sing? Even when the tormentors demanded songs from the people in their captivity, the singers hung up their harps and refused to sing. Imagine still thinking, this must be a dream. My parents are insane. They are tethered to the past, I am never going to sing…The day came when they realized this is what I was called to do and this is what they will do once they go back and rebuild the temple.1
