1. Zephaniah 1:16 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

What is the irony of this kind of battle?

Zephaniah 1:16 (ESV)

16 a day of trumpet blast and battle cry against the fortified cities and against the lofty battlements.

Zephaniah 1:14–17 speaks of the Hebrew concept of holy war. Ordinarily, as in the time of the conquest, God would lead the fight against his enemies. Holy war was supposed to give tremendous comfort: For the Lord your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory (Deuteronomy 20:4). But in this instance the whole idea is filled with bitter irony, for God would lead the charge against his own people.1
