1. Zephaniah 1:17 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

What does the image of pouring out the victims’ flesh like dung suggest?

Zephaniah 1:17 (ESV)

17 I will bring distress on mankind, so that they shall walk like the blind, because they have sinned against the LORD; their blood shall be poured out like dust, and their flesh like dung.

The image suggests that the victims’ dead bodies would be left on the ground where they fell, since their flesh or entrails (perhaps their vital organs) are of no greater value than dung. Says Patterson, in summary of the second half of Zephaniah 1:17, Human life (flesh and blood) is thus reduced to a thing of no value, with even corpses being treated as despicable refuse (cf. Jeremiah 9:20–22; Jeremiah 16:1–4; Jeremiah 25:32–33).1
