Truth brings opposition

Ezra 4:1–24 (ESV)

1 Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the returned exiles were building a temple to the LORD, the God of Israel,

What is it that bothers these people so badly about the Jews returning to Jerusalem to rebuild their temple and worship Yahweh, the God of Israel? It is simply this: the truth—that is what bothers people. If you talk about your faith like you talk about ice cream, you are okay. If you talk about it in terms of, I prefer peanut butter and chocolate over fudge, you are okay. But the minute you say, peanut butter and chocolate is the only way, you are in trouble. Even though it is true, the minute that you say this is the only way, people start to get upset about it. Because when you have people making absolute truth claims, it is an inditement against their false views. Now if you want to hold a false view along with everybody else's false view, you are in the club. But the minute you say, you know what, Yahweh, the God of Israel. He is the true and living God and all others are imposters, then you have got trouble.1
