Opposition is certain

Ezra 4:4–24 (ESV)

4 Then the people of the land discouraged the people of Judah and made them afraid to build

Sometimes Satan is subtle, sometimes he is overt. Let me put it this way: in Afghanistan, he is overt; in America, quite a bit more subtle. But opposition is always his response through unbelievers, to the work of God. And in fact, Jesus reminds us that in this world you will have tribulation...That is your best life nowtribulation, suffering, sorrow. Thanks be to God, that there is a rest of the story. Faithfulness to God in our culture will be deemed as rebellion, as hate, and sooner or later as prosecutable. I believe that wholeheartedly. I believe that there is a day in my lifetime, in which it will be against the law for me to say homosexuality is a sin. A day is also probably coming in my lifetime, where it may well be against the law for me to say, parents, you have the biblical duty to spank your children…The days are coming. And so understand this, faithfulness to God is always going to look like rebellion to our culture.

Opposition and resistance may have its small victories, but there is no stopping the work of God, period. So the people of God should be encouraged to stand firm, even when it looks impossible and when compromise is tempting. We trust in the One who has said, in this world you will have tribulation, but do not fear, I have overcome the world.1
