1. Mark 11:11 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

What is the suffering of Jesus in this verse?

Mark 11:11 (ESV)

11 And he entered Jerusalem and went into the temple. And when he had looked around at everything, as it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the twelve.

Jesus has entered Jerusalem as King and Messiah. People are able to know who he is and God’s promise of salvation that will come with him (Psalm 118:1–29). But he is rejected by (a big part of) the inhabitants and leaders of Jerusalem (see the citation of Psalm 118:22–23 in Mark 12:10–11). The King has to take care of an overnight stay. And (only) with his disciples he goes to Bethany to overnight there—probably at the house of Lazarus and his sisters, his friends (John 11:3–4).
