The teaching of prayer is a remarkable reaction of Jesus on Peter’s words the fig tree that you cursed has withered
(Mark 11:21). He teaches his disciples about faith and prayer. What is the link with the cursed tree?
Jesus has shown his divine power by cursing the tree. The disciples see the result of his powerful word. The disciples have to work in God’s kingdom, so they need the power of the King. What we need is faith. In Christ our life will bear fruit, without him it is fruitless (John 15:4).
That is why they need prayer. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you
(John 15:7). In Jesus’ name his disciples can remove obstacles. Jesus does not tell them to perform tricks (moving mountains), but to pray to the Lord to remove obstacles in their ministry. The disciples had the power (in Jesus’ name) to overcome resistance (see e.g., Acts 5:9; Acts 8:20).
It is not a word in general about prayer, but they will overcome the fruitlessness and enmity of the temple (see e.g., Acts 4:13).
Jesus underscores the power of prayer, when we trust Jesus and know he will answer our prayers. That does not mean he gives everything we ask for, but all we need to bear fruit.
22 And Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God.
