The instructions to the priests are given in the form of a “command” or “instruction” (ṣwh). This term is an imperative and highlights the force of the instructions that are required of the priests in the sanctuary. The main concern of this verse is that the fire on the altar of burnt offering should never go out. The point is made five times (Leviticus 6:9, Leviticus 6:12, Leviticus 6:13) both positively (“shall be kept burning”) and negatively (“shall not go out”).
9 “Command Aaron and his sons, saying, This is the law of the burnt offering. The burnt offering shall be on the hearth on the altar all night until the morning, and the fire of the altar shall be kept burning on it.
