The meaning of this phrase is either that Jesus instructed the apostles by means of the Holy Spirit or that the Holy Spirit was the source of guidance for Jesus in choosing the apostles. Perhaps it refers specifically to John 20:22 where Jesus gave a commission to his disciples.1
