The term translated as “conformed” means literally that you take your shape from another. The picture then is that you model your behaviour after the standards that those around you set so that you can fit in. Conforming to social expectations is the way of least resistance and the key to being accepted. In this verse Peter discourages—better, prohibits—letting yourself be shaped by expectations around you precisely because you are “children” of the Father and so need to be holy as he is holy.
