The Spirit guides Jesus into the wilderness to be tempted by Satan. This is how Jesus must begin to fulfill the righteousness of God (Matthew 3:15). This is incredibly important, because God keeps his words, even when he speaks of judgment. He made death to be the penalty for sin (Genesis 2:17). A man is coming who will bear this “death penalty”—Christ.
Adam probably did not yet know exactly what that death penalty meant. There was no death in paradise. There are interpreters who think otherwise, but it is our opinion that death is a consequence of sin and belongs to sin. Death only came because of sin. In the suffering of Christ, we see what this death
entailed: dying, breathing the last breath, and being abandoned by God. Sin brings separation between you and God. That is death. Christ suffered that death. In doing so, he bore the penalty. Thus God’s righteousness (his just demand) has been satisfied! God has proved to be righteous. We can rely on him!
