1. Matthew 4:3 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

Why doesn’t Christ make bread out of stones?

Matthew 4:3 (ESV)

3 And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.”

Christ did many miracles but he never did it for himself. His miracles are signs, and they always serve to point to God. They are never there for his own “pleasure.” Moreover, Christ wants to be human in order to pay for the debt as a human being. That does not include doing superhuman feats for himself. Christ wants to serve God and not to seek his own well-being. And thus, he is man as God intended man to be.
