The word portion
had a special meaning for the Israelites. It included the sure knowledge of belonging to God’s people and having the land which God had given them as their permanent possession—something which no one could take away from them. In contrast to those who had to keep sacrificing for their peace of mind and even sacrificed their children to their gods, David was assured of the Lord. God was his portion—a gift that no one could ever take away from him.
5 The LORD is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot.
