To adjure is to command a person to take an oath. Scholars have noticed that the word was commonly used in exorcism rituals. Typically, it was the exorcist who would adjure the demon, not vice-versa.1 This demon knows whom he is dealing with; but his choice of words shows that he had very little respect for Jesus.
7 And crying out with a loud voice, he said, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do not torment me.”
