The term itself means that you respect, extend value to a particular person (or institution he represents). Not surprisingly, not “everyone” in the culture of Asia Minor was seen as worthy of “honour”; certainly slaves were not. We could also understand that the wealthy and the influential received greater expressions of respect and value than the poor and handicapped. But Peter’s instruction is to show deference and esteem to all, irrespective of race, creed, social position, habits of lifestyle, etc. If the Lord could show such deference to sinners so as to send his only Son for their redemption, surely it is only fitting that the reborn show “honor” to “everyone,” irrespective of whatever “aroma” might cling to him.
