Importance of the Old Testament for today

1 Peter 1:13–21 (ESV)

13 Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

It is instructive that as Peter quotes Leviticus 19:2 he provides no hint that the laws that the Lord used in the Old Testament to teach Israel the significance and extent of being different should still be literally applied in daily life to teach the same lesson in the new dispensation. See Galatians 3:24–26 for an explanation of the reason why these stipulations of the law no longer function as a tutor. Of course, the principle of the Leviticus instruction remains very necessary for Peter’s readers; the reborn cannot act like the preborn. So the authority of the Old Testament is maintained for the New Testament church.
