The reference to bearing our sins comes again from Isaiah 53:4, Isaiah 53:12. The purpose of this addition is to draw out for his readers that Jesus’ (unjust) suffering had a deeper purpose; that is, though he never erred he nevertheless suffered “for you” (1 Peter 2:21), he took on himself the penalty our sins rightly attract. If he, though sin-free, did not resist evil persons who ganged up on him (Matthew 5:39), it is only fitting that slaves (and all Christians)—sinners as they are—should not resist the injustice that comes their way.
24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.
