1. 1 Peter 3:1 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

What is the meaning of the clause “even if some do not obey the word”?

1 Peter 3:1 (ESV)

1 Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives,

The term “the word” is a reference to the gospel that was preached to the people of Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, etc., calling its peoples to repentance and faith in Jesus Christ (1 Peter 1:12, 1 Peter 1:23, 1 Peter 1:25). Some who heard obeyed its call to believe while others did not. Specifically, some women obeyed (and so were “born again,” 1 Peter 1:3, 1 Peter 1:23) while their husbands did not, and so remained spiritually unborn. To such husbands the wife becomes a stranger, a foreigner, a sojourner (1 Peter 2:11) because he does not grasp what makes her tick; they each do life from a very different script.
