Ananias and Sapphira were part of the new covenant community. They had publicly committed themselves to following Jesus Christ and they would most certainly have been baptized. Though no statement is made regarding their eternal salvation,1 the context of the passage (Acts 4:32 – 5:11) suggests that they were not true believers. Ananias and Sapphira served as an example of hypocrisy as opposed to the true faith shown by Joseph Barnabas.
