What exactly did Ananias and Sapphira do wrong?

Acts 5:1–2 (ESV)

1 But a man named Ananias, with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property,

Ananias and Sapphira sold a property and then pretended that they were giving all the money from the sale to help fellow believers in need. Presumably they wanted to be seen in public as a couple who were worthy of admiration due to their selfless giving, following the example of Barnabas. Though it is not stated, we can assume that Ananias told Peter that the money which he was giving was the full proceeds from the sale of the property.
