Why did people lay the money at the apostles’ feet?

Acts 4:34–35 (ESV)

34 There was not a needy person among them, for as many as were owners of lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold

The fact that the proceeds from the sale of housing and land was placed at the apostles' feet indicates that the apostles had the responsibility of overseeing the distribution of the money.1 It is likely that this money was collected on regular occasions as the apostles were teaching in Solomon’s Portico, an easily accessible section of the temple court.2
