The concept of testing the Spirit draws attention to Israel’s time in the wilderness where they are said to have tested the Lord (see Exodus 17:2; Deuteronomy 6:16; Deuteronomy 33:8; Numbers 20:13, Numbers 20:24; Psalm 78:18; Psalm 106:32). In that instance, their testing involved complaints about God’s provision. In the case of Ananias and Sapphira, their actions showed an arrogance of thinking that one can behave in a manner contrary to God’s will with no consequence.1 Therefore, they tested God by denying his goodness and rejecting the fact that righteousness is a virtue to be sought by Christians.2
9 But Peter said to her, “How is it that you have agreed together to test the Spirit of the Lord? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.”
