  2. Exposition

How do we see Moses' unwillingness to lead Israel out of Egypt?

Exodus 3:1–4:31 (ESV)

1 Now Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian, and he led his flock to the west side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God.

God calls Moses to bring his people out of Egypt. Moses had been willing to liberate Israel forty years ago (Acts 7:25). Now he lists his excuses not to go:

  • Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh…? (Exodus 3:11).

  • Whom do I tell the Israelites has sent me? (Exodus 3:13).

  • What if they do not believe me? (Exodus 4:1).

  • I cannot do it: I cannot speak very well (Exodus 4:10).

  • Please send someone else (Exodus 4:13).

The Lord answers all his objections but in the end he becomes angry at his unwillingness (Exodus 4:14). He sends Moses to Egypt. And Moses obeys.
