In her attempt to establish a paradise without God (and so achieve happiness, utopia), the great prostitute pursued a one-flesh policy with all humanity. This was the deceiver’s counterfeit union intended to supplant the glorious union God intended with humanity through the redeeming work of Jesus Christ. Through his atoning sacrifice on the cross, the Lamb intended to bring about union with Christ, so that Christ (by his Spirit) would dwell in us and we in him (note the repeated usage throughout the New Testament of the term “in Christ”). This union with Christ represents the reason why God fashioned marriage (Ephesians 5:31–32). That union—already reality for New Testament saints—may/must be celebrated in appropriate fashion; hence the reference to “supper.” The climax of that celebration is clearly on the day of Christ’s return (Revelation 21:2–3; Revelation 22:17).
9 And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” And he said to me, “These are the true words of God.”
