The reason that Mark brings two stories together

Mark 5:21–43 (ESV)

21 And when Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered about him, and he was beside the sea.

In God’s kingdom, Jairus’s reputation, rank, gender, money, and even religious pedigree hold no sway with Jesus. Though the bleeding woman has none of these things to her advantage, she has the one thing Jesus is looking for: faith.1 It is by faith alone that she reaches out to touch Jesus. In this way, she is lifted above all by Jesus and serves as the foremost example in Mark 4:35 – 5:43 of how to respond to him.2
