Why does Jesus say to Jairus, “Do not fear, only believe”?

Mark 5:36 (ESV)

36 But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.”

This is perhaps where we best see the relationship between the two stories recorded in Mark 5:21–43. For this is exactly what Jesus commended the bleeding woman for (Mark 5:33). Though she approached in fear and trembling (Mark 5:33) her faith or belief made her well and meant she could depart from Jesus in peace (Mark 5:34). When Jesus addresses Jairus he is almost charging him to imitate the bleeding woman. [Jesus] speaks directly to Jairus. There is still one thing Jairus can do, but he must shift his focus from the circumstances of his daughter’s death to Jesus himself.1 The bleeding woman is in some ways contrasted with those who came from Jairus’s home (Mark 5:28, Mark 5:35). She believed that Jesus could make her well, and now Jairus too must have faith in Jesus.
