Psalm 9:1–4 (ESV)

1 I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart; I will recount all of your wonderful deeds.

I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart. These are very intense words. I will recount all of your wonderful deeds. These wonderful deeds are the basis for the poet to plead with God. His plea for justice is a line throughout this Psalm. In Psalm 140:12 we read a good example of someone who trusts that the Lord will execute justice fairly “I know that the Lord will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and will execute justice for the needy.”

The poet is very pleased with the name of the Lord. He also tells of that name by singing psalms. He calls God the Most High. God is above all those in power. The poet finds his joy in him, and this does not depend on the circumstances in which he finds himself.

Although fortunately, God does act (see Psalm 9:5–6, Psalm 9:16). The enemies must, in the end, bow before the Lord, the Most High. He executes his plan, such as he relates to a young Samuel, in 1 Samuel 3:11, Behold, I am about to do a thing in Israel at which the two ears of everyone who hears it will tingle.
