God’s actions are very powerful.
The poet uses more than one indication for his opponents: nations,
namely those not belonging to God; the wicked,
such as those who are uncircumcised, and those who oppose God and his justice. In various ways it is related how God has defeated them.
The word name
appears more often in the Psalms. It is used for the Lord himself, for instance in verse 2 of this Psalm (Psalm 9:2) Here it is used for saying that the Lord has blotted out the name of the wicked forever and ever. This means that they do not count anymore, not even their past (Psalm 9:5–6). And their cities have been ruined as a sign of their annihilation as nations, as name.
They have become completely insignificant.
The poet seems to address a specific matter, but in his Psalm, he includes the nations. The framework is much larger than a private matter.
5 You have rebuked the nations; you have made the wicked perish; you have blotted out their name forever and ever.
