The book of Acts recounts the spread of the early church and the manner in which Christ works to take the gospel from Jerusalem, to Samaria, and finally to the end of the earth (Acts 1:8). Your sermon from Acts 5:17–42 must cover the second round of persecution faced by the apostles in Jerusalem. You must explain the different attempts by the Sanhedrin to prevent the spread of the gospel as well as the response of the apostles (and God). In terms of application, you must make it clear to believers that we should expect persecution and opposition to the Christian faith. We should not be surprised when there are disparaging comments in our office, when we are mocked or hated because we seek to obey Christ. This opposition should not cower us into silence and submission. We must continue to obey God, no matter the cost. We must continue to support the ministry of God’s Word, trusting him to use our efforts to accomplish his plans.
