Introduction
With the apostles continuing to preach in Jerusalem, it does not take long before the high priest and his associates react. They need to do something before all the people are persuaded that Jesus is the Christ—before they lose too much power and influence over the citizens of Jerusalem.
Opposition to Jesus Christ
Explain: what did the high priest do? How did he (and the rest of the Sanhedrin) hope to stop the apostles from continuing with their preaching?
Explain: are the actions of the Sanhedrin unique? Why do people generally oppose the preaching of the gospel today and thousands of years ago?
Explain/Apply: should we expect persecution as Christians? Where are some of the places where believers are currently being persecuted? Can we pray for them or help them in some way?
Explain/Apply: what kind of persecution might we expect today? Give examples that vary in severity, from a snide comment to losing your job etc. What does it not mean to be persecuted for righteousness' sake? Are we being kind and courteous with people in our efforts to win them for Christ?
The continued spread of the Christian message
Explain: what does God do to ensure that the Christian message continues to be heard? How do the actions of the apostles fit in with this?
Explain: what is the Christian message that must continue to be preached and why (see Acts 4:12)? This is a chance to briefly explain what the apostles said to the Sanhedrin—about Jesus being Prince and Saviour, and the offer of forgiveness being open even to them.
Explain/Apply: what does God want his church to focus on? What does God want us to do when we face opposition? Who will help us to be bold and brave like the apostles when we come under pressure?
Conclusion
Jesus Christ will build his church despite opposition. Though Satan makes plans to destroy, his plans will fail. Through the preaching of his Word and by the power of his Spirit, Jesus will ensure that his people are gathered in his church. He will give strength and courage to those whom he has called to preach, so that they will continue to do so even in the face of opposition. He will also help believers to remain faithful to God when they are forced to choose between obedience to God and man. Let us not be discouraged when we face opposition but pray that God will help us to stand and to do so in wisdom and love.
