Job does not hold superstitious beliefs (Job 31:26–29), such as those surrounding the professional cursers
of the ancient Near East (see Numbers 22:1–6). Yet, with bitter irony he invites these magicians to use their powers against the day of his birth (or conception). Leviathan is a mythological sea monster. Perhaps Job wishes that this monster had been called upon to devour the day of his birth.
8 Let those curse it who curse the day, who are ready to rouse up Leviathan.
