Given the fact that Stephen was debating with men from the synagogue of the Freedmen, it is likely that primarily Greek-speaking Jews were involved.1 The people, elders, and scribes of the law would then primarily be those who were associated with this synagogue in some way. This would be the first occasion in Acts where the common people are said to be antagonistic toward the Christian faith.2
