Paul begins by assuring the Thessalonians that he not only longed for them but actually made a concerted effort to see them (1 Thessalonians 2:17). This effort was motivated by a desire to see them but was thwarted by Satan (1 Thessalonians 2:18). The desire in turn was inspired by a view of the coming of Christ, when the transformed lives of the Thessalonians would be a source of joy and honour for Paul (1 Thessalonians 2:19–20).
