1. 1 Thessalonians 2:17 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

Why is Paul putting an emphasis on the word "we"?

1 Thessalonians 2:17 (ESV)

17 But since we were torn away from you, brothers, for a short time, in person not in heart, we endeavored the more eagerly and with great desire to see you face to face,

We is the first word of the sentence in Greek, indicating a degree of emphasis. Though a number of commentators understand Paul to be focussing on himself in contrast to the Jews (1 Thessalonians 2:14),1,2 it is better to understand the pronoun in relation to the for you at the beginning of 1 Thessalonians 2:14. We thus find an alternating focus, where 1 Thessalonians 2:1–12 focuses on Paul and his coworkers, 1 Thessalonians 2:13–16 focuses on the Thessalonians, and 1 Thessalonians 2:17–20 again directs the readers’ attention to Paul and his coworkers. This alternating focus highlights the close relationship between Paul and the Thessalonians.
