Open to the love of the pastor

1 Thessalonians 2:17–20 (ESV)

17 But since we were torn away from you, brothers, for a short time, in person not in heart, we endeavored the more eagerly and with great desire to see you face to face,

It is important for Christians to open themselves to the love of their pastors and fellow-believers. Sometimes, out of a desire to protect oneself, or perhaps just because of an introspective personality, a person may cut himself off from the love that others are attempting to show to him. This is unkind, unhelpful, and unbiblical. Notice Paul’s appeal to the Corinthians:

We have spoken freely to you, Corinthians; our heart is wide open. You are not restricted by us, but you are restricted in your own affections. In return (I speak as to children) widen your hearts also (2 Corinthians 6:11–13).
