The marriage between Christ and the church is to serve as the norm for the marriage between husband and wife. Just as Christ loved the church, so husbands are to love their wives. The love of Christ for the church is a self-denying, self-sacrificing love, as well as a love that prevents Christ from ever leaving or forsaking his wife
(Hebrews 13:5; Matthew 28:20). This same love and faithfulness must be reflected in the marriages of God’s people.
14 But you say, “Why does he not?” Because the LORD was witness between you and the wife of your youth, to whom you have been faithless, though she is your companion and your wife by covenant.
