Paul says that the believers were destined for afflictions and that it was God who brought it into their lives. Paul says that suffering is unavoidable for God’s children. This is echoed throughout the New Testament: in the teaching of Jesus (e.g., Matthew 5:11–12; Matthew 10:17–23; Mark 8:34–35; John 16:33); of Paul himself (e.g., Romans 8:17; 2 Corinthians 4:7–12; 2 Timothy 3:12); of Peter (e.g., 1 Peter 3:17; 1 Peter 4:12); and of John (e.g., Revelation 1:9; Revelation 6:9–11). The idea that the gospel is a recipe for a healthy, prosperous, and trouble-free life is completely unbiblical.
3 that no one be moved by these afflictions. For you yourselves know that we are destined for this.
