Members of the Sanhedrin covered their ears because they understood that Stephen was blaspheming God and they did not wish to hear his words. To their minds no human being has the right to share the glory of God at his right hand. They thought that Stephen was attacking the uniqueness of God by suggesting that there was someone standing next to him in heaven.1
57 But they cried out with a loud voice and stopped their ears and rushed together at him.
