1. Acts 8:31 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

Why did the Ethiopian require someone to explain things to him before he can understand?

Acts 8:31 (ESV)

31 And he said, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.

Though God’s Word is clear and perspicuous, there are nevertheless certain passages which require explanation if they are to be understood. In particular, the Old Testament needs to be read through the lens of Jesus Christ (see Luke 24:25–27, Luke 24:44–47).1 The eunuch’s request for help shows humility on his part.
