Now Eliphaz starts educating Job about the value of his suffering. For Eliphaz it is obvious that Job’s suffering is due to sin in his life, and that the suffering is God’s way of disciplining Job. Rather than complaining, Job should regard himself blessed
for such discipline.
If Eliphaz is right, God is a very strict master! We know that when God chastises those who belong to him, he does so with much grace and patience. Yet, in this so-called chastisement, Job has lost everything.
17 “Behold, blessed is the one whom God reproves; therefore despise not the discipline of the Almighty.
