As a result of the close connection between Philemon, Apphia, and Archippus, it is commonly understood that Apphia was Philemon’s wife and Archippus their son.1 The fact that he is identified as a fellow soldier
serves to highlight his involvement in the work of ministry (cf. Philippians 2:25; Colossians 4:17), perhaps serving as a pastor in Colossae or Laodicea.2
