This verse has been used as a basis for Christian Apologetics and Philosophy (since in Greek the word translated as defense
is apologia). While that is undoubtedly legitimate, Peter’s intent with his use of the word apologia was not at all Apologetics as we understand it today. Instead, as the community asks Christians why they persevere in doing good even while they are ridiculed for it, Christians should always be ready to explain (make a defense
) why they respond to derision as they do.
