Peter envisions a scenario where recipients of Christians’ good deeds (who perhaps themselves revile the Christians for their good deeds!) ask for an explanation as to why they respond to evil with good. Undoubtedly it is right and proper for God’s people to speak of the gospel whenever there is opportunity. But Peter’s focus is much narrower. While he instructs God’s people to do good at every turn, he does not expect Christians to verbally announce why they do what they do (Matthew 6:1). Yet when they are asked, they certainly need to be able to explain.
