1. 1 Peter 3:22 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

Why is Jesus’ destination described as “into heaven”?

1 Peter 3:22 (ESV)

22 who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him.

Throughout Scripture “heaven” is the dwelling place of God and so stands for the throne of him who imprisoned those rebellious demons (1 Peter 3:19). This is also where the inheritance Christ obtained through his resurrection is currently being stored for the benefit of the saints (1 Peter 1:3–4). That Christ after his suffering and death and resurrection could go there is nothing less than a victory march. The “prince of the power of the air” (Ephesians 2:2) could not stop him! Given how much the “god of this world” (2 Corinthians 4:4) could destroy in the flood, this is a wonderful thought!
