Psalm 17:1–15 (ESV)

1 Hear a just cause, O LORD; attend to my cry! Give ear to my prayer from lips free of deceit!

The author calls upon God to provide justice. As ground for his plea, he mentions his own sincerity and innocence. On this point, this psalm can be compared with Psalm 26:1–12. The author prays for safeguarding against the enemies. The earthly life can be difficult during these times. But he finds comfort in God’s salvation and the promise of eternal life.

The psalm cannot be connected with a specific history. This psalm is meant to comfort those who experience persecution. And by persecutors we must certainly also think of those from our own people (sometimes very close by); in David’s case, think of Saul and Absalom.

  • A plea for safekeeping from enemies (Psalm 17:6–12)

  • A powerful closing plea with a view to a beautiful future (Psalm 17:13–15)
