The result of the judgment will be the desolation of Babylon and, ultimately, the whole earth. One Babylon after another will be destroyed until all sinners are removed from the earth. Isaiah appeals to the motive of fear: look at the Day of Judgment! It is not something people wish to hear, but Isaiah was a true evangelist, caring about the souls of men. To keep quiet and not warn the people about the coming judgment would show a lack of love. The destruction of Babylon was a prelude to the ultimate Day of Judgment.
9 Behold, the day of the LORD comes, cruel, with wrath and fierce anger, to make the land a desolation and to destroy its sinners from it.
