This verse is the heart of Isaiah’s message in this chapter. Babylon is mentioned by name for the first time in the message (other than in the heading given by Isaiah 13:1). They will face a similar fate to Sodom and Gomorrah. This is a reminder that what will happen is not merely due to the conflict between nations but is a supernatural judgment directed against Babylon, just as in the case of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah.
19 And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, the splendor and pomp of the Chaldeans, will be like Sodom and Gomorrah when God overthrew them.
